AFS Console

14 Sep 2010

AFS Console, a monitoring system for AFS which reports the health status of the service and statistics, from global summary views to more detailed reports.

report

The project I worked on was about upgrading AFS Console, speeding it up, crucially. It involved changing the monitoring sample collectors and setting up an optimised MySQL database system to store and query the data quickly. This involved not only carefully choosing the right set of indices necessary to insert and retrieve samples quickly, but also tune the MySQL service to face the load.

Front cover illustration: close-up on the rear-side of one of the many rack-mounted servers which have been installed in March 2008 into the CERN computer centre. The CERN computer centre hosts the machines used by all CERN users in their daily tasks. They serve various purposes: some are mail servers, others run database management systems, applications or distributed file services. The tape vault, where huge amount of data from the LHC experiments are collected, is also located in the computer centre, as are the computing clusters to process them.

The front cover was entirely laid out and typeset with LATEX, would you believe.
